Quoting things on a blog or message board for the purposes of discussion, education and the like is fine. It falls within the Fair Use (I believe that's the term)Act. I would just be sure to give the author or publication credit.
I had worried a little about this too. I'm glad I know because I have a book of Christian meditations that I'd like to quote from. :o)
